Eliminate Anxiety and Fear with IV Sedation

Patients suffering from dental phobia can opt for conscious IV sedation at our Montreal, QC practice. Millions of patients suffer from dental anxiety. In extreme cases, panic-stricken patients may avoid the dentist for months or even years. Without proper care, minor oral health issues can worsen, resulting in a host of more serious issues, such as extensive decay or gum disease. Drs. Charles and Patrick Casey provide a variety of sedation options to alleviate anxiety and help fearful patients receive the dental care they desperately need.

What is IV Sedation?

Intravenous (IV) sedation is one of the most common and effective methods of sedation dentistry. Because this technique delivers medications directly into the bloodstream, the effects are nearly immediate. IV sedation induces a sleep-like state during the procedure and typically stimulates short-term memory loss following the appointment. IV sedation induces what is known as a "twilight sleep," which means that although thoroughly relaxed, patients can still respond to the dentist and follow his instructions.

IV Sedation: Am I a Candidate?

To determine your candidacy for sedation dentistry, Dr. Casey will perform a thorough assessment. Your complete medical history will be reviewed, along with any medications you are taking. While most patients are eligible for IV sedation, patients with certain medical conditions may not qualify. IV sedation may be right for you if you experience:

  • Dental anxiety
  • Fear of needles
  • Anxiety related to past dental situations
  • Extremely sensitive teeth
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • A strong gag reflex

Risks and Benefits of IV Sedation

The most serious risks associated with IV sedation occur when the administered dosage is too high. However, our skilled and knowledgeable doctors have been specifically trained in sedation dentistry. When administered correctly, IV sedation is one of the safest and most effective methods of conscious sedation.

If you are nervous, anxious, or fearful about going to the dentist, IV sedation may be an excellent solution for you.

IV sedation offers several benefits for patients. Because the doctor has immediate access to your bloodstream, IV sedation can also be immediately reversed if necessary. Additionally, the dosage can be carefully controlled throughout the duration of your procedure. This results in a higher level of sedation during your treatment and a fairly quick recovery time afterward. Patients who have a complex treatment plan, or who wish to complete several dental procedures in one visit, can significantly benefit from IV sedation.

Preparing for IV Sedation

Prior to your procedure, you will be given a list of pre-operative instructions. Carefully following Dr. Casey’s recommendations can help prevent any complications. Typical preparatory instructions may require that you:

  • Fast: Patients must fast for approximately six hours before undergoing IV sedation.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Typically, it is recommended to abstain from consuming alcohol for 24 hours before your procedure.
  • Stop Smoking: We recommend you stop smoking approximately 12 hours before your appointment.
  • Make Arrangements for a Driver: Because IV sedation affects your motor skills and memory, it is important to have a friend or family member drive you to and from our office. You will not be able to drive for the remainder of the day after receiving IV sedation.
