Dental Implants Fundamentals

For the right candidates, dental implants are the absolute best solution for replacing missing teeth, or even just a single missing tooth.

The dental implant itself is a surgically-embedded tooth root made from either zirconia or titanium. An abutment connects the implant to whichever dental restoration you need, whether it be a dental bridge, dental crown, or dentures. Dental implants provide the highest possible level of stability and support for restorations.

If You Are Suffering From Tooth Loss Know You Are Not Alone

Adults lose an average of 7 teeth by the age of 64

*According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research

While many patients report feelings of embarrassment due to missing teeth, it is actually a fairly common problem and certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Rather than live with tooth loss, you can undergo restorative treatment at Smile Montreal to improve your dental function and confidence.

Advanced Technology for Superior Implant Dentistry

Our Montreal office utilizes the most up-to-date dental implant techniques and materials available. We are one of the few practices in Canada currently using the cutting-edge i-CAT® system to analyze and pinpoint the optimal locations in the jaw for implants. The i-CAT® system works similarly to a CAT scan, but produces detailed oral diagnostics without subjecting patients to uncomfortable conditions. Thanks to this technology, the implant procedure at Smile Montreal is more precise and less invasive for the patient, increasing the long-term success of treatment.

We also work with nSequence® labs, the leader in surgical guides for implant dentistry, to precisely plan and perform your treatment with your unique final restoration in mind. These dental restorations—porcelain crowns, dental bridges, or implant-supported dentures—are crafted with the highest quality materials that look virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

"I recently visited this dentist clinic and I was impressed by the level of care attention that the doctor and staff provided. Even though I usually feel stressed when I go to the dentist, this time was different. The relaxing and welcoming atmosphere of the clinic combined with the friendly demeanor of the staff made my visit a really fun experience. " Hamed Oukhay

A Long-Lasting Investment in Your Smile

The upfront cost of dental implants is typically higher than that of other tooth replacement options. However, because they are more durable and long-lasting than alternative treatments, implants are well worth the initial investment. Although your restorations will likely need to be replaced over the years, dental implants will typically last the rest of your life with proper care. You will simply need to brush, floss, and use mouthwash daily, just as you would for your natural teeth.

It is important to attend regular checkups and cleanings following implant treatment. While your restorations will not be subject to decay, gum disease could eventually cause the metal posts to become exposed. Continuing to practice good oral care can ensure healthy, beautiful results for years to come.

Implants Can Save You Money Over Time

Some patients avoid life-changing dental implants because the procedure is too considerable an investment. This type of thinking can be shortsighted. In fact, receiving dental implants now can actually save you significant amounts of money over time by helping to prevent various issues that are even more expensive to treat.

The primary way that implants prevent these issues is by stopping the jawbone recession that occurs when teeth are missing. This recession, which causes the jaw to shrink and become misshapen, increases the risk of additional tooth loss. Additional tooth loss elevates the likelihood of suffering from gum disease and heart disease.

Gum and heart disease can severely compromise your overall health and force you to spend massive sums of money on treatment. You can help avoid this with implants.

Take a Closer Look  at the Implant Placement Process

Smile Montreal uses high-quality dental implants made from titanium or zirconia. Once they fuse with your jawbone, we will secure a custom-made dental prosthetic to restore your smile.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

"The implants are permanent and stable so your restorations will function just like your natural teeth."
"The implants are permanent and stable so your restorations will function just like your natural teeth."

Implant Preparation

During an initial consultation, we will develop a personalized treatment plan to decide which restorations are a good fit for your missing tooth or teeth. Your dentist will take dental X-rays to check whether your jawbone can support implants or if you need additional treatments to prepare for surgery. Dr. Casey may need to extract a damaged tooth or perform a bone graft.
one

Anesthetic

We will provide you with a local anesthetic to numb the area before the actual procedure. If you are still anxious about your dental work, we can offer sedation dentistry to ensure maximum comfort. These techniques include oral conscious sedation and intravenous sedation, which induce a relaxed state while you undergo the procedure.
two

Placing Implants and Recovery

Once the anesthesia takes effect, your dentist will place small titanium or zirconia posts in your jawbone. In the next four to six months after surgery, the implants will fuse with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration. In the meantime, we will provide you with a temporary restoration.
three

Abutments and Dental Impressions

After you have healed, we connect prosthetic components called abutments to the titanium or zirconia dental implants. These abutments allow your dentist to attach the restoration to the implants later. Your dentist will then take impressions and scan your mouth using our innovative E4D electronic imaging technology. These virtual scans provide a precise map of your teeth and bite to send to our trusted nSequence® Lab for a beautifully constructed restoration.

Securing Restorations

When your custom restoration is complete, we will schedule an appointment to have it fit. The dental prosthetic will be secured to the abutments, and any last-minute alterations will be made to ensure your comfort and oral function. Maintenance for dental implants is significantly easier and more convenient than alternative restorative options like removable dentures. The implants can last for life and the restorations are incredibly stable, so they will look and act like your natural teeth.

We Can Also Perform a Sinus Lift

As discussed above, a bone graft may be necessary before dental implants if you need additional jaw density and volume. If the bone below your sinus cavity had atrophied, we can perform a sinus lift to make you a better candidate for dental implants.

During a sinus lift, our Montreal dentists will raise your sinus floor and graft biocompatible material into the lifted area to create a healthy foundation to support your implants.

Worried You Don't Qualify for Traditional Implants? Consider All-on-4 Treatment

Long-term tooth loss can unfortunately cause jawbone recession, which disqualifies some patients from standard dental implant treatment. While you can undergo bone grafting to supplement your jaw tissue, you may want to consider an alternative dental implant treatment known as All-on-4®.

The All-on-4 technique uses just four implant posts to secure a full denture. Rather than place the implants straight into the jaw, we insert them at strategic angles to maximize contact with the bone tissue. This ensures the All-on-4 denture has the same stability as a traditional implant-supported restoration. If you are missing most or all of your teeth and want to learn more about All-on-4, please call or contact our Montreal, QC, office online to request a consultation.

Recovering From Dental Implant Surgery

Here are a few tips to help you during the recovery process following dental implant placement.

Take Medication as Directed

Your dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain medicines or prescribe you medication. Take these medications as directed.

Use Ice

Use ice packs on your cheeks and jaw for about 20 to 30 minutes at a time to reduce pain and inflammation.

Eat a Soft Diet

For the first few days following implant placement, eat a soft diet. This will reduce irritation to the implant site and allow it to heal properly.

Keep Your Head Elevated

For the first few days after your implant surgery, your dentist may suggest keeping your head elevated even when you sleep. This will help reduce pain and swelling.

If at any time you have questions about your recovery, or if you have concerning symptoms such as excessive swelling, bleeding, or pain that is not easily managed, please give us a call at (514) 937-6558.

Alternatives to Dental Implants

Partial denture in gloved hand

Dental implants may not always be the best option for a patient. When it comes to tooth replacement, there are typically three options: a removable dental appliance, such as a complete denture or partial denture; a dental bridge; or dental implants. Dentures are removable and secured in place with the aid of an adhesive, and traditional bridges require a healthy adjacent tooth or teeth for support. However, while dentures and bridges are typically less expensive, most patients find dental implants to be worth the investment for their added convenience, durability, and natural-looking results.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

How long will my implants last?

The implants and abutments are designed to last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. Your dental crown, dental bridge, or denture can last for about 15 years or more with the right care. However, it is important to remember the restoration will wear over time and will eventually need to be replaced.

Does implant placement hurt?

No. The area will be completely numbed before the procedure begins. We also offer sedation for patients who feel anxious or have trouble sitting still. Mild discomfort following placement is to be expected, but it is usually managed easily at home using over-the-counter pain medications or medication prescribed by your dentist.

Are most dental implants successful?

Yes. According to data reported by The American College of Prosthodontists, dental implants have consistent success rates of 90-95% or even higher for healthy individuals who practice proper oral hygiene habits.
