Dental implants are a revolutionary tooth-replacement solution that permanently restores your smile’s function and appearance. These surgically implanted titanium posts serve as the sturdy base upon which our Montreal, QC, dentists can place a brilliant, long-lasting restoration, like a dental crown.

At Smile Montreal Dentistry, your oral health is our number one priority. That’s why our talented dentists, Drs. Charles and Patrick Casey, want to give you all the information you need about dental implant aftercare.

Proper dental implant aftercare contributes to their remarkably high success rate of nearly 98%. Here, our knowledgeable team will tell you how to properly care for your new implant, and what to avoid while you’re healing.

Dental Implant Aftercare: The First 48 Hours

For the first two days following your procedure, you will need to take special care of yourself and your new implant.

What to Avoid

It is crucial for a blood clot to form at the surgical site. We recommend avoiding certain activities that might disrupt the formation of a blood clot, such as:

Bleeding

While the blood clot is forming, it is normal for the surgical site to drain some blood. To prevent excessive bleeding, our Montreal team recommends:

If you notice excessive bleeding for longer than 24 hours, then contact our dental office immediately.

Dental Implant Aftercare: The First Week

Patients should continue to conduct proper dental implant aftercare past the 48-hour mark and into the following week.

Pain Management

Once local anesthesia wears off, you may start to notice moderate post-operative pain. If you have a prescription pain medication, carefully follow the instructions on the labeling, and avoid operating heavy machinery.

If you decide against prescription pain medication, then an over-the-counter pain medication–like ibuprofen–can help quell pain and swelling. Remember to carefully follow the instructions on the packaging.

Swelling

Swelling is normal after dental implant surgery. Applying ice packs to the side of the face for 20 minutes at a time for the first day can soothe the pain and ease swelling.

Soft Foods

For the first week, avoid hard, crunchy, or sharp foods. Instead, opt for softer foods, like:

Prescription Antibiotics

Some patients, like those with artificial joints, may need to take an antibiotic during their recovery. Patients should take their antibiotics as prescribed and to completion. Please note: antibiotics may negatively influence the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.

Proper Oral Hygiene

Proper dental implant aftercare requires gentle and consistent oral hygiene practices. If you are given a prescription oral rinse, then carefully follow the instructions on the label. You may also gently rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution. Continue to gently brush and floss your teeth as usual.
